Is Chess a sport or a game?

For me, chess is just a game but others say, it is a sport.

What is you opinion? Sport or Game? Let's begin the discussion. Thank you for your opinion.

a sport, chess is too competitive to be just a game
it can be a game, as I play it but as soon if u take it a little serious it becomes sport if not a science
I think its sport because the level of concentration is incredible high if u play well, much more like soccer, rugby, only boxing, kick boxing, mma, or riding a bicycle, chess is too intense if played correctly to be just a game, although the usual metaphor is the boxing today I think its more tour of france or so, because in boxing u have breaks, if its sport legal not in the street, but in a bicycle competition tour of france or so
u are always pedalling or 99 percentage of the time,
so in that sense the sense of time, the sense of endurance and resistance, the grip which happens in chess, whether u are attacking or defending, chess if played correctly its a very demanding task and I will probably will start playing it soon
not heavylifting but some rapid game instead of blitz
because the 4 hours match that has to be tough
and in chess also u have the bad characteristic that is all inside
if u box, u punch get punched jump walk, so there is physical energy but in chess the tension is mental, there may be heart rate faster and so, so It is definately a sport, since nowadays they consider sport almost anything, boules, darts, shooting or pool, there are many things that are sport u can look at the OLympiads and so
but that does not mean that chess has to be included in the same category I think its in fact good that chess has its own terms, because most things are just sport, but chess is sport plus science plus art plus programming plus technology
so its really more than sport thats the thing.
It is a sport plus more things.
If you look at it technically, it is a sport. Let's look at the definition of a sport, "An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment". Alright, so sports involve physical exertion and skill. Physical exertion in chess can be seen when you play like 10 games of chess in a 2 hour span, you will get tired as it's pretty exhausting. It also requires lots of skill as you probably know already. Let's continue, "... in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment". That is also true for chess, two individuals compete against each other and it's played for entertainment. So chess is technically a sport.
The IOC defines it as a sport. I don't know if that makes it definitive, but it certainly makes me learn toward it being a sport.
Chess is a sport, a science, and an art. But it remains a game.

BTW sports are games. ;D
In my opinion that which does not strengthen a muscle tissue should not be a sport but that is maybe a narrow definition
I think chess is half sport to be true, it can only be considered a sport if u do it like fischer, go swimming play tennis and get the stamina right to not become a coach potato but that its not chess itself that its the training, fact is if u just play chess u can have a very poor physical health now u may say that sport and health are not related but I disagree there, orthat sport is even bad for health creates injuries
The flow of oxigen, circulatory sistem respiration, cardio they call it, u dont have that in chess, chess is a sport with current definitions, but u only train above the neck, u can play chess while at the hospital, that looks like a good thing and a bad thing but it does not look like sport at all, no running
the competition its there but I think in the definition of sport it should be included the concept of physical motion in a big sense such as sumo, basketball, jabalina, kayak u do that u become healthy and strong, u just play chess, ur health deteriorates even if ur confidence and ur mind is strong, u need the movement of the body but thats my personal opinion, its not the official definition
U need to fitgth with gravity not just with abstract notions but with ur own body or lifting a truck things like that, that is a sport in my opinion u may have ur own opinion.
Because if chess can be considered a sport then we can start considering videogames a sport too, and then watching television and then suddenly we are coach potatoes.
So I keep my narrow definition u can keep the official one.
you could say it is a mind sport or whatever like how darts are a bar sport, but for me sports require athleticism and coordination. I think it is a game more than anything.
