Clock trouble

also could you create handicapped time games for bullets
even if they are casual,
so that one has 1 1 vs 1 2 for example
for those with bad mouse broswer connection, computer etc
This is still happening and still no explanation. Surely a mod or someone could find out for us how this is occuring?
I've had the same happen over and over. It makes bullet unplayable, which is a shame because I do enjoy it when I'm not fighting things I cannot control.
One thing you can check is to open up CMD in windows. Type in "tracert lichess.org" and hit enter. Don't enter the quotes. What it does is trace the route you take to get to lichess.org servers. For me 1 or 2 of the hops lag massively.

The numbers change when I am in a tournament as well. Sometimes hitting up to over 700 ms.

If you are on a Mac then you open up Terminal and type "traceroute lichess.org" and hit enter. Without the quotes of course. It is the same command as described above.

I'm really not sure if there is anything you can do about the route. But at least it is some more info.

This is what mine looks like:

OK I tried this... and it doesn't add up...

My ping is 24ms

1. 1ms
2. 7ms
3.16ms
4.request timed out
5.request timed out
6.request timed out
7.request timed out
8.request timed out
9.request timed out
10.23ms
11.27ms
12.24ms

Ping statistics show no packets lost min 23ms, max 28ms, Adv 25ms

Earlier someone bezerked me, I decided I would not lose on time and I was like lightening every move premoved save a couple of moves out of check. I lost on time and they had 7 seconds left.

I premoved and looked at the clock and it said 0.8 secs, but after the move it undid the move and said time out.

A couple of times I was clicking on join game and I got no window open... It said black did not move...

One time it showed their clock ticking but actually it was my move, the 10 seconds left time occured with my clock reading 3.5 seconds... which was then eaten by 3 premoves.

SO frustrating too when I actually do play a decent game despite the added time pressure, I get the opponent crushed and run out of time and I know I moved quicker than they did. Unless I can mate in less than 22 moves I lose... and how often does that happen with zero thinking time?

Those request timed out things seem really messed up. I don't understand why that is not being computed into your ping. If those requests are hitting your internet service providers routers and timing out then you should let them know.

It would seem to me that every time you are making a request to lichess.org you are trying to connect one way. Failing. Trying another way. Failing. and so on and so on until it finds a way through.

So your ping in reality is way off. The ping command is just not taking into account these failures it seems because you can't calculate a time for failure maybe. This is all speculation of course. It would explain a lot though. If you added in those time outs I'm sure your ping would be terrible.

I'm not sure if there's anything we can do about it.
If that is what is happening then I don't understand why it says my ping is low and I get no lag compensation.

Also you would think that a route is no good then that route would not be used anymore and the good routes would be the primary choice.

Thanks for shedding some light on this, it appears that the problem doesn't lay with lichess but with something between me and the server.
Well talking to someone who knows about such things and they tell me that the "request timed out" thingies don't really mean anything. Those routers are set to not respond to pings and the only important thing to look out for is that I haven't got any circles going on with the same IP repeating.

So as it stands my Ping is good, and they think the issue is to do with Lichess. The lag compensation should add time onto the clock of the lagging player shouldn't it? It should not be adding it onto the opponents clock.

I am still waiting for someone from the site to explain what is happening. Surely someone technical must work for the site, yet total silence from anyone affiliated with lichess.
