It is really helpful. Now we can prepare against our opponents for free without purchasing any valuable software. Thank you very much, Lichess!

However openingtree.com does not request donations and does not offer anything other than this feature. Therefore openingtree.com are not really competition — users still need to play chess somewhere for it to be analysed by openingtree and they have a direct integration with lichess to import the games.
This feature offers a chance to find catch moves on high profile opponents. I have a high profile opponent who always beats me in a certain line. Now looking at the line with engine, or looking at what others play there in general does not help. It is not tested, but now I was able to look up what works against this opponent, in fact a very surprising move works against them, which after all the engine agrees to be a good move, when you play on the variation, however it would never suggest it on its own. Also general book suggest other most played moves. So this is a unique opportunity, which was not possible before. Knowing my own book is not terribly interesting, because I know what I play, but being able to look at how others can be caught in their own game, now this is something.

Who is in need of an opening explorer?
Chess players. <----------------
They may not offer a chess server, but they require traffic.... from chess players.
So they pull people from the site (ofc not by force, but not strictly from free will, more due to a necessity for the tool).
And it is worse, they technically aid the direct competition of lichess, other chess sites.

But now that lichess has the tool, and the other sites dont, or limited someway, people may be more inclined to create an account here without the need to export their databases, open another tab, upload it to the other site and be jumping back and forth between the lichess tab and the other one in case they are checking something else. <----- It is not hard to do, but it is an inconvenience.

Im actually quite surprised they dont ask for donations, im not against it, but they are competition, directly or indirectly. And its not like people wouldnt donate.

I actually purchased a tool like that several years ago, it was a great help, and if the circumstances were the same, i would purchase it again. The newcomers who wish to grow also have the need for such a tool, and they would also purchased it it there were no free options. Dont you think many of them would be so grateful to have a site that gives them all the tools, opening explorer, puzzles, lectures, tournaments, leagues, clubs a community to help them, an engine, a database of their own games, that they would gladly donate?

It would be a bummer if they had to recur to external sites for just the core tool that is not on the site, but that is also free.
It was a dumb move to not having done it before. But now that they have it, for free, i can say "Lichess is the most complete website for any chess enthusiast that wants to grow as a player, or just wants to have some fun with casual games"

Below that just put an image of the features of the site compared to other sites, free or payed.
Lichess chess.com other chess sites Opening trees
Games free free free x
Puzzles free limited unless you pay What are those? x
Engine free limited unless you pay Its complicated to install free
Opening tree free $XX.XX Mo. Dont have it free
Tournaments free With membership yes, but too few players to fill any x
Other resources free paywall free, but few x

I dont know why you people look at it as if it was no biggy. Its a colossal improvement to the site and it gives another advantage to fight the biggest competitor.
