Puzzles query

on the left top of every puzzle, it says played "this no of times" here is an example.

Played 645 times

Does this "played 645 times" here mean,
1) this position has occurred 645 times in the game
2) (or) this puzzle has been solved 645 times already before me.

Option 2, but with "solved" rather replaced by something like "tried", i.e. it counts also people who failed.
