In-between move

The "in-between move" is known also as zwischenzug or intermezzo.

This is an unexpected move that creates a threat that the opponent has to answer and an expected move is made later on.

This is one of the most difficult things in chess to see and according to statistics missing an in-between move in the calculation is one of the main reasons why Grandmasters are losing.

Probably the first "in-between move" in the history of chess was made by Paul Morphy and did not get him any big advantage (but the mechanism is the same).
